The purist
I choose my own tools, but who arms the defences?
your own work, on a base that defends itself
This is you if you choose your own tools and want nothing you did not ask for, but you would happily hand over the upkeep of the firewall, the snapshots and the detection.
Red Team
The one who gets in
Can it be broken into?
reconnaissance, attempt, report
This is you if the question that keeps you awake is “what if I tried from over there?”
Blue Team
The one who was watching
Did we notice?
logs, correlation, reconstruction
This is you if your victory is an incident that never became a disaster, and that nobody will ever notice.
Purple Team
The one who does both
Does the defence actually hold?
attack, then go and look from the other side
This is you if you do not trust a control you have never seen fail.
Hacker
The one who takes it apart
What does this program really do?
take apart, understand, put back together
This is you if the first thing you do with something new is open it.
The promise is not the number of tools
It is that the defences are armed and verified. Installing a tool is the easy part. Remembering, on the twentieth machine, which service had to be started and not merely installed is another trade. And a service that is installed but switched off looks exactly like one that is protecting you.
